On a visit to Le Havre, Claude Monet decided to take his oils, a few brushes and a blank canvas to sketch, from his hotel window, a view of the Normandy port bathed in sunlight and shrouded in mist. His prodigious output of nearly 2000 paintings was catalogued by Daniel Wildenstein. It all started in the early morning of 13 November 1872. Monet's "Series paintings" are well known and notable, and include Haystacks, Water Lilies, Rouen Cathedrals, Houses of Parliament, Charing Cross Bridge, and Poplar Trees. With the repetitious study of the subject at different times of day Monet's paintings show the effects of sunlight, time and weather through color and contrast. What made Monet different from the other Impressionist painters was his innovative idea of creating Series paintings devoted to paintings of a single theme or subject. The term Impressionism is derived from the title of his painting Impression, Sunrise ( Impression, soleil levant). Monet was a founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein-air landscape painting. Monet’s influence on art is apparent throughout history as he is regarded as being one of the founding fathers of impressionism, which paved way for modern art movements such as Fauvism and Expressionism. This is a list of works by Claude Monet (1840–1926), including all the extant finished paintings but excluding the Water Lilies, which can be found here, and preparatory black and white sketches. His artistic style emphasized capturing his perception of nature through light and color rather than creating a photographic-like representation. Monet completed “Impression, Sunrise” in just a few hours while overlooking the port of Le Havre from his hotel room. Despite initial mixed responses from critics and viewers, the painting became one of the most important works of Impressionism and helped inspire the movement’s name. The work was first exhibited at an exhibition in Paris in April 1874 alongside other Impressionist artists. Impression, Sunrise Monet reproduction for sale, hand-painted replica in oil on canvas. The painting shows a beautiful contrast between orange and blue-violet colors against a misty morning harbor scene. The orange and yellow hues contrast brilliantly with the dark vessels, where little, if any detail is immediately visible to the audience. Monet depicts a mist, which provides a hazy background to the piece set in the French harbor. Completed in 1872, it depicts the harbor of Le Havre, France at sunrise. This famous painting, Impression, Sunrise, was created from a scene in the port of Le Havre. Impression, Sunrise is one of the most famous paintings by the French Impressionist artist Claude Monet.
